About the experience

A six-thousander in the Puna of Catamarca. Landscapes from another planet.

Volcán San Francisco, standing at 6,018 metres, sits on the border between Catamarca and Chile, deep in the Puna de Atacama. It is one of the most accessible six-thousanders in the world, making it an excellent choice for those seeking their first experience in extreme high-altitude mountaineering. The expedition sets off from the town of Fiambalá, crossing desert landscapes of breathtaking beauty: salt flats, pumice fields and volcanoes on the horizon. The route presents no technical difficulties, but the altitude demands a progressive and rigorous acclimatisation. Base camp is established at around 5,200 m above sea level, and from there the summit push is completed in a long but deeply rewarding day. The view from the top takes in the driest desert on the continent and dozens of volcanoes on both sides of the border.
